So lets get started:
Created a new file with the appropriate dimensions and added some Rulers to represent the bleed. Added the logo for "Ancient Aliens", resized it and cropped out the head that was on the right.
Added the secondary title. To that title I added a Bevel & Emboss, a Gaussian Blur, and a colour gradient, to make it look more like the original title. Unfortunately I do not know what are the two fonts used in the main title, so I went with a similar font.
Added a stock image of the Earth, with a lens flare already on it. I resized it and place it appropriately. The Lens Flare's light gets a bit cut off, I fix it a bit using a layer mask, but will continue to fix it as I develop the image.
Added more stars to the top right of the image. The Lens Flare is even more evidently cut off. Also used a Layer Mask to hide details of the stars that I didn't like.
Last details to fix the Lens Flare. It looks OK now.
Added the Alien Head and used a Layer Mask to remove its background, and his neck, as well as smooth the blending process. Aligned the head so the reflection from the Lens Flare matches the light on the Alien's face.
Added a Red Photo Filter, but masked out everything except the Alien Head.
Added a Yellow Photo Filter, but masked out the Alien Head and parts of the Earth.
Messed around with the Curves to make the scene a bit darker and more dramatic.
I believe the front is almost done, at this point, just some final touches remaining.
Added the "R18", "DVD Video", and "Far Reach" logos. I moved them around to get a feel to where to place them, and then reduced their opacity to 80% to help it blend in a bit better, and not clash with the rest of the picture.
I believe I'm done with the front cover, I believe it looks pretty good, even though it is simple. Off to the spine ...
As you can see, it was already my plan to use part of the Earth in the spine, this gives it a sense of continuation from the front cover, and it helps fill out the empty spaces in the spine.
I also created some folders, in the Layers tab, to help with organization.
I then Free Transformed the "R18" and "DVD Video" logos and placed them on the spine.
Here I had to separate "Experiment" from "Termination" (as they were in the same layer), decreased their size, and the size of the main title, and proceeded to placed them on the spine.
Well, that's the spine done, time for the (pain in the) back ... cover.
MOWAR STARS!!! Because you can never have enough stars.
A cute little Static QR Code. I wonder what it does, hmmm?!!
Four Images from the Trailer, with a 10px stroke, to create a boarder.
Added a Mothership to the Back Cover. To make it a bit more dynamic I decided to make the ship go in front of one of the pictures. I cleaned it up a little and gave it a small Gaussian Blur.
Added a Red Photo Filter, and a Curves, to the ship. Using the Layer Masks on these Adjustments, I tweaked it a bit, so that I could still see some of the colours before the Filters were applied.
Added some text, that relates to what is said in the trailer.
Well bummer, I forgot the video was 1080p, so it makes more sense that it's a Blu-Ray Disc than just a normal DVD, so I added the Blu-Ray symbol instead.
Moved the company logo, from the front cover, to the back cover and changed the sides of the labels on the front cover. I think I'll leave it as it is.
